<Updat3:  Due to an abnormal reaction to what very well may have been too much ethanol (beer/shots) the night before, I was looking way more forward to this party on Monday night rather than the actual night of…I mean free Amstel…really?…really.  Normally, I would have been triple fisting these lower calorie, great tasting, imported beauties.  But tonight, I was just gonna try and make it through :^X

I always have a good time at these booze sponsored events.  They usually spare no expense.  So between the flowing beverages, nice venue and acts you def have a pretty good chance of enjoying the night.  Being a fan of the Heineken/Amstel brand, the 25 minute line outside did little to deter me until the drizzle started.  Luckily, we made it in just before the rains and even though I wasn’t feeling 100%, we bee lined it to the bar to see about these elusive free Amstels.  Yup.  It was true.  There they were.  Pretty maids all lined in a row.  You could hear clink after clink of empty bottles being thrown into the trash by the dozens.  The mob around the bar were only in a slight frenzy at this point so it wasn’t that big of a mission to wait your turn.  In an attempt to return true to form, I grabbed a sponsor branded plastic cup in each hand and retired to the wall to try and enjoy.  Ahhhh, the 1st sip was delicious…no lie.  Sh*t, even the 2nd sip was good.  And then it went down hill from there.  Needless to say, each consecutive taste was worse than the previous.  But remember, it’s not you baby (Amstel), it’s me.

So with that out of the way, we adventured around Webster Hall to see what else was going on .  One of the floors had a very interesting exhibit designed to be a good way to interact with patrons.  Ad hoc gallery was commissioned to “personalize” a screen printed T-shirt for anyone willing to wait in line and fill out a card with basic details (size, gender, email and design).  Their 6 person team was working feverishly to get these things cranked out. Being able to stand around and watch the process was a nice twist to your standard event lingering.  However, on top of the designs being borderline cheese the major catch (which we didn’t find out about until the excitement of the Ts was too high) was that it was going to take 2 hours to get the finished product.  So looks like someone walked away with my XL, orange emblazoned buddha white tee.  (I got my eye out for you pal.  You better walk around with a spare shirt at all times because if I EVER see you with my tee on…I’m taking it back.  Word.)

And now…Mr. Hudson.  Mr. Hudson….Mr. Hudson…Who are you Mr. Hudson? And why do you go by your last name?

I first heard of this dude via Kanye’s statement to MTV and I quote, “I believe Mr. Hudson has the potential to be bigger than me, to be one of the most important artists of his generation”.  Being that I am a Kany-ater and really can’t believe 3/4ths of the sh*t he says, you can imagine I didn’t take this to heart but…did he say BIGGER than ME.  That cemented it, now I know he is full of crap because how can anyone ever be bigger than ‘Ye???  Wrong! Trick question! THEY CAN’T!

Anyway, with a co-sign by Mr. West you can imagine Hudson’s stock went way up.  Let’s see if the proof is in the pudding.  I actually forgot he was performing tonight so it was kind of a nice surprise to at least…hate, hate, hate…

Dressed in black on black on black, this blue blood, Jude Law-looking dude followed his band out on stage with a guitar in hand seemingly ready to do his thing.  The crowd barely flinched as Mr. Hudson’s thick brit accent introduced himself and thanked them for coming out.  The murmur of audience was barely drowned out by the PA system.  Even halfway through the 2nd trak people continued their convos with very little regard for MH.

Part of the reason for the distracted audience might have been Mr.’s lack of presence/stage charisma.  It’s not like he wasn’t trying to conjure up a little shimmy, shimmy ya…it just wasn’t materializing.  Also, the band didn’t seem to be working as a cohesive unit.  I was def taken aback when he mentioned that they had been touring as a band for the last couple years because the feeling I got was that this was a leaderless group of musicians that had just been thrown together last Sunday for this specific showcase.

Thankfully, the sound of venue and mix was pretty on point (his mic could’ve been a bit hotter).  One thing I can say is, “that boy can sing” (from Coming to America).  He really does have a great voice (when he stays in his range).  Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about the vocal melodies he chooses and his lyrics….ahh ghad….some of the worst I have heard in a minute.  “I can’t keep a a stiff upper lip anymore”, “who are you leaving with if it’s not me”, “white lies…I’ll tell a million more for you”.  WT???  Ugh! Horrible! Just horrible! The song arrangements were good with only a few sections sounding a little busy because of the piled on sounds.  I can hear at least one of his trax def doing well on Top 40 radio after it is put through the studio recording polish machine (Drake or auto-tune anyone?). Plus, he’s a good looking white dude.  He’ll be fine.

Even though the overall slant of this review seems negative….I enjoyed his set.  Seriously.  I was impressed by his voice, his ability to at least craft a song (he plays guitar) and what looked like enough confidence in his overall ability to become a legit star.  Oh, and the Bravery were there…whoever they are…pce.  –AV>
